Moving Tips and removalists trade secrets – a big couch, a skinny doorway....no problems!

In yesterdays post you would have seen how to move a couch through an agreeable doorway, but what about when that doorway is stubborn and the standard technique for moving a couch through a doorway doesn’t work?  Here goes

You should already have a furniture pad laid on the floor in your doorway. This is to protect your couch from scuff marks, scratches or tears when you do some of your manoeuvring.... whether your couch is leather, suede or fabric it doesn’t make a lot of difference.....damage is damage and can be avoided. The first way to try is to work out what side of the door jamb has the most space on both sides for hooking your arms of your couch around, if it is the left hand side then lift your couch up on its end (vertically) with the arms of the couch facing the direction of the most space. The couch should be resting on furniture padding, then measure if the couch is taller than your door jamb. If not its easy, if you have a two and a half seater or three seater couch then it will be too tall and will be a lot harder. If its shorter then simply lift the couch through making sure it remains vertical as possible (bulbous couch arms make this difficult sometimes), if you don’t have the strength to lift it through then you can drag it on the furniture pad but being very cautious that there aren’t any spikes on the floor that could penetrate the padding.  The idea is to hook the arms around the door jamb, to make this easier to describe when you look at a couch side on you would notice it is kind of in the shape of a “V”. The inside of the “v” is the part of the couch that hooks around the door jamb. Once your through you place the couch on its feet again and you have done it. See Mondays post for the SECRET, ADVANCED, HIGH LEVEL REMOVALISTS  technique of moving a couch through a thin troublesome door way. I really shouldn’t be sharing this technique with you and I am giving away trade secrets!
