Moving Tips – A Removalist Secret Revealed
This technique is the last way to try and get a large couch through a thin doorway....if this won’t do it your next resort is pulling the house or the couch apart or get a new couch, or a new spot to put it. I must stress that this is not a manoeuvre you will see your average removalist perform, I call it the Complete Manoeuvre and its for the most part only used by advanced removalists. Its similar to your local doctor trying to perform brain surgery. Here goes......... Your couch may be too tall to stand up in your doorway or you just can’t get enough hook out of your couch to get the arms through the door jamb and this has probably happened due to a skinny hallway on one side of the door. Firstly like in the last post you have to stand the couch up with the arms facing the direction with the most scope for hooking an arm around.....eg. looking at the door you may have 30 cm on the left hand side between the door jamb and the wall behind it and only have 10 cm on the right. So the couch will be standing on its left hand side with the tops of the arm rests facing left too.
Then you make sure the couch is touching the door top and bottom...so its as close to the opening as possible. Get your helper to list the bottom through first as the top of the couch will be restricted by the top of the door jamb. Then as the couch is being pulled through bottom first and still on a steep angle have the helper to twist the couch or hook the couch arms around the jamb as they lift. You will need to slowly lower the couch down as it is twisting to your left. If this is a sofa bed the bed will need to be tied up very well as the couch will nearly be upside down by the time its horizontal in the door jamb. When the arm is hooked through and on the other side of the door jamb lower your side down to horizontal but off the ground. To paint the picture of which way the couch is facing now the part your bottom normally sits on is facing the ground but to the left on a 45 degree angle. The next move is to reverse what you have just done. Get the helper to lift his side up slowly in the air as you lower yours and this time you twist and hook the arm to your right to get the arm through. Again it will most likely only hook through when it is on a sharp angle....almost vertical.
When this manoeuvre is completed the couch will be on its right hand side with the arms facing your left. The only 2 things that can stop this manoeuvre from working is only having about 5-10 cm of space between the door jamb and the wall behind it ON BOTH SIDES or the couch touching the ceiling when its on its side vertically but both of the factors are not always deal breakers. Just sometimes. It depends on the length of your couch, the height of the back rest and robustness of the arms and the doorway dimensions. I am sorry if this is hard to understand as it is really hard to write, in fact it’s easier to perform than to describe. I do recommend if you are uncertain or come unstuck with moving your own couch, call us to come and give you a lift with just those items....it can work out a lot cheaper than you think...especially if we are already in your area.
