Gen Y Removalists..What Would The Hard Nuts Think?
I have been around long enough to see a different generation or removalists take over. When I started furniture removals in Adelaide in ’97 give or take.....the industry was dominated almost entirely by what I like to call Dinosaur Removalists (Furno’s). These guys were of a pretty typical image..... blue bonds singlet, bit of a beer guts or really skinny and tall, ruggers shorts, beard or goatee and your trademark tattoos generally consisting of a dagger and some roses somewhere on their arms. This is a generalisation but definitely on the money. These guys were ugly but tough and highly skilled at their craft, they would lift anything with no regard for Occupational Health and Safety (O,H & S) because it didn’t exist. A piano up a flight of stairs “we’ll give it a go for you love, for an extra slab” pretty much summed up what I saw for all of those years, oh yeh and every day ended at the pub with other Furno’s.
These days its all CHANGED......I wonder what these retired Old School Removalists think when they move house themselves and order a truck and two men to help. They open the door to a few young Gen Y Removalists with gel in their hair, blonde streaks for cosmetic purposes, long cargo shorts with bright Hi Vis T Shirts to meet O,H & S standards, the piano up stairs is possibly staying there because of O,H & S and they need two men to pick up a dryer because its over the legal O,H & S limit. Dont get me wrong...they still work like Trojans but there are rules now. They spend smoko texting on their iPhones and when the guys knock off for the day they buy a 4 pack of Cruisers and go and sit at home on their computers messaging friends on Facebook, they are far prettier than the old school as they more than likely use products like skin creams. Whilst these guys are also very highly skilled the industry has become more transient.... Its harder to get the guys that want to make a career out of it now. I am a part of this generation and it still makes me laugh to see such a big shift as I had the opportunity to be around when the Furno’s ruled the roost.
